AZHABACHYE LAKE

It is located at the right bank of the Kamchatka river in 6 km to the south from the river channel and in 40 km from the sea.

The lake is the fourth in size (62,5 km2) among Kamchatka's lakes. Despite the fact that the lake seems to be flood-plain according to its location and external characteristics, it has marine relic origin because earlier the part of this depression was covered by the sea waters. The length of the lake is 13 km; the maximum depth is 7,7 km; the coastline length is 37 km; the average depth is 17,05 m. The size of the lake basin is 336,5 km2.

The name of the lake comes from the native residents language - from itelmens. "Azhaba" means red salmon with the expressed spawning features; there's also another reading - "Azaba". Indeed, the Azhabachye lake is the biggest spawning site of red salmon in the Kamchatka river basin. In some years red salmon of the Azhabachye lake amounts 50-60% of this species catch in the river.
