SHIVELUCH VOLCANO

It is an ancient volcano which was formed millions years ago, it is one of the biggest volcanoes of Kamchatka.

coordinates: N56.65489º, E161.35006º

It is located in 80 km to the north from the Klyuchevskoy volcano along the Kamchatka river valley, in the marsh land.

If an artist would decide to paint the malicious and life offended old man as a volcano, the Shiveluch volcano would be a good model. It is an enormous volcano with several different-aged and different-shaped cones, grooved by chasms and craters. Its age is many hundreds thousands years, and it still threatens by catastrophic eruptions.

After the formation of the mane cone in the result of explosions and collapses, the wide caldera was formed in the southern part of the volcano, and a new cone rose in the middle of this caldera. Later a new crater-caldera was formed in the first caldera, and it destroyed the part of the new cone. And this crater has become the centre of the further eruptions. The remained part of the old cone is called the Main Top with 3335 m height, the younger cone is called the Crater Top with the height of 2700 m.

The Shiveluch eruptions are explosive. In 1964 the domes were almost destroyed by powerful explosions, and the double crater was formed there. The diameter of the north one is 1,7 km, the south one - about 2 km. The extrusive dome started its formation in the north crater in 1980. The dome is still growing.

Due to strong volcanic activity, the decisions to organize a tour to the volcano Shiveluch are made individually only.
