KARYMSKOYE LAKE

The Academy of Sciences Volcano is located in the middle of the Karymsky Volcanic Centre. The eruptions, accompanied by depressing and collapsing, caused the round caldera formation. In the south the caldera is edged by the ridge named after the Academy of Science as the volcano. Its height is 1100 m.

The bottom of the caldera is filled by the Karymskoye Lake with 3,5 km length and 70 m depth. According to the wave-cut line at the slopes, earlier the water level was about 120 m. The lake surrounded by high slopes is very picturesque. In the south it borders with the smoking Karymsky Volcano. At the opposite side there is the Science Academy ridge. Its dome-shaped top with prominent rocks descends symmetrically in both sides and resembles the bat with extended wings.

In 1981-1982 the TINRO scientific worker S.I. Kurenkov transferred the young fish of red salmon from the Kronotskoye Lake. The experiment was successful. In 1984-1985 there was a lot of fish in the coastal line, some samples were even bigger than their ancestors in the Kronotskoye Lake.

But in 1996, January, the 2d, there was the underwater eruption in the Karymskoye Lake, which was considered the first demonstration of the volcanic activity in the caldera for a long period of time. In the result of the eruption the fish population in the lake died. And the Science Academy volcano was declared active.

The Karymskoye Lake, including all the internal slopes of the caldera and the hot springs on the coast, is the complex character natural monument.
